August 2008

Brothers and sisters,

We hope to have our Sunday School classes up and running soon – maybe by the end of August.

Since we are limited to one room we’ve been looking at an intergenerational curriculum from “Desiring God Ministries.” Yup, it’s a course meant for ages 6 to 106! It’s called “The Righteous Shall Live By Faith: A Study for Children and Adults on the Ten Commandments.” You can preview it at childrendesiringGod.org

We’re also planning on starting a Sunday evening children’s class at brother Jeremy Weaver’s home. Right now we’re looking at several possible curricula, also from “Desiring God Ministries,” which you can look over right here.

We’ll let you know more as soon as everything is ready to go!

Blessings in Christ,

David

Brothers and sisters,

Brother Charlie Henderson preached an excellent message this morning from 1 Peter 4:7-11 concerning our need to live our lives in the knowledge that Christ may return at any moment. In light of this, he exhorted us to be awake, to be alert, and to be active.

Brother Charlie also helpfully provided a sermon outline for us to take notes as he preached. I was thankful for this and made use of it, especially in noting cross references that help to illustrate what Peter wrote.

This week I’m planning to take some time to go back over my notes. I’m going to reread 1 Peter 4:7-11 along with the cross references and maybe a commentary or two. I want to sit and prayerfully think about what Scripture says and how I should respond to it. I plan to ask myself: How am I doing in this area? Where have I failed? What specific steps can I take to do better? I also plan on talking about the message over supper with my family, especially my children.

I want to encourage you to do the same. Don’t waste the sermon!

Blessings in Christ,

David

Brothers and sisters,

If the Lord wills, tomorrow morning Crossway Baptist Church will gather to worship. And so, I encourage you to:

- Come prepared to sing praises to your God and Savior. Consider what love God the Father has shown toward you in sending His Son to die as an atoning sacrifice for your sin. Consider Jesus, who loved you and gave Himself for you. Think deeply on this and come prepared to sing to Him. Do not worry about the quality of your singing voice or of those around you. Instead, sing for the audience of One.

- Come prepared to pray. Confess any sin in your life that may hinder your prayers. Come ready to join your prayers with those of your brothers and sisters in Christ.

- Come prepared to listen to God’s Word. Be ready to actively listen to the sermon as the preacher lays it out for us. Bring your Bible and open it up as he preaches. Follow along in the text. Take notes. Think about what’s being taught. Talk about the sermon with others after church. Apply it to your life during the week.

- Come prepared to love one another. Today, think about those likely to be there tomorrow morning. Pray for them. Think of an encouraging word you might say to them. Come ready to linger a bit both before and after the service. Be ready and willing to greet any new faces you see. Come ready to love one another.

Have a blessed Saturday. Please pray for those of us who will lead our worship tomorrow so that all things may be done to God’s glory alone!

Blessings in Christ,

David
